Founded in 1997, the Environmental Records Centre for Cornwall
and the Isles of Scilly (ERCCIS) has now firmly established
itself as one of the most eminent Local Records Centres in
Great Britain.
Based within the Cornwall
Wildlife Trust at Allet, near Truro, ERCCIS acts as a
centre for the collection, management and distribution of
wildlife and geological information relating to Cornwall and
the Isles of Scilly. ERCCIS endeavours to collate all the
information available to build an accurate and informed picture
of the biodiversity in the region (please also refer to our
Aims and Objectives).

We actively support local recording effort, working with
local recorders, recording groups and members of the public
to note the whereabouts and other details of the plants, animals,
rocks and fossils found in our County.
Information technology is used for the collation and provision
of data, with our wildlife database being linked to a Geographical
Information System (GIS) (computerised maps overlain with
wildlife information). ERCCIS currently holds over one million
species records on a computer database. Many of these records
have been collected and given to us by local recorders, organisations
and members of the public, to whom we are extremely grateful.
Such facilities allow a wide range of projects
to be undertaken by ERCCIS staff members,
including an audit of the biological and earth science importance
of the road verge in Cornwall; and the status of Eel Grass
Zostera spp. in the coastal waters of Cornwall and the
Isles of Scilly.
ERCCIS makes available the wildlife and geological information
we hold to anyone, through our Wildlife
Information Service, affectionately known as WIS! WIS
operates as an accessible and effective enquiry service for
everyone, including the general public, conservation organisations,
statutory bodies, consultants and landowners. See
also our aims and objectives page.
We work in collaboration with other conservation organisations
to create an information network of wildlife and geological
data as part of the National
Biodiversity Network (NBN).

The Centre is hosted by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust and is
largely funded by the Trust, Cornwall County Council and Natural England. It is run in partnership with a range of data users
and providers, including the Environment Agency, The National
Trust, the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, district councils
and the Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Federation of Biological
Recorders.
