The Wintering Atlas

Précis of Fieldworker Instructions

This is simply an overview of the instructions. Those wishing to contribute should study the main document before proceeding

Please be sure that you have clearly identified your tetrad. It is best to contact the organiser and get a photocopy of the tetrad(s) that you wish to visit.

The Prime Aims of the Survey

1. To record the species within each tetrad

When: The fieldwork period is 1 December – 28 February

How: Simply record the species seen within the tetrad and using the habitat during the fieldwork period.

Species need not be counted, but a recorder may encounter certain species where they consider that a count may be useful or worthwhile in the sense that it may represent a significant proportion of the total number within the tetrad.

There is no time limit on this part.

2. To make an estimate of the population of each species in each tetrad.

When: The fieldwork period is 1 December – 28 February.

How: Visit each tetrad for exactly 1 hour between 1 December and 28 February inclusive.

Record all the birds that you encounter in your timed walk that are within the tetrad and using the habitat.

Please contact us if you wish to take part.
