Orthopteroid Insects of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly:
An updated provisional atlas
The Orthopteroid Insects of Cornwall and the Isles of
Scilly: An updated provisional atlas, CISFBR Occasional
Publication No. 2 by ECM Haes (published by CISFBR 2004) is
a completely revised atlas of Bush-crickets, Crickets, Grasshoppers,
Cockroaches, Earwigs and Stick-insects for Cornwall and the
Isles of Scilly. Although still called ‘provisional’,
since many tetrads and monads are yet to be covered, it is
written in the style of a definitive atlas so that, in future,
purchasers can simply update the maps from the supplementary
lists which will follow, probably annually.
The atlas is provided with tetrad maps produced by the Records
Centre. These are, after careful consideration, given three
symbolised date zones: pre-1984, 1984–1993, and 1994
to present. All records received to the end of October 2003
are included, and full maps are provided for all species known
to be resident at some period. The atlas has been put together
by Malcolm Lee, who has been able to include full colour photographs
of all resident, and most casual, species within the body
of the entry, together with a selection of detailed images
showing key identification features. As a further aid to identification,
average body lengths are given for all species. Habitat shots
for our rarer species are also included. Full details of pest
cockroaches, migrants or casuals are covered by text entries,
including localities and grid references. The cover includes
a distinctive illustration by Heidi Flumm, specifically painted
for this publication.
There are several useful appendices. The first includes a
list of 35 sites considered by the author to be the most important
for orthopteroid insects in the county (this entry will be
modified as appropriate in the subsequent supplementary lists
to be issued). The second reproduces four key historical papers
on the Cornish orthoptera – WP Cocks 1858, CW Dale 1890,
J Clark 1907 and CW Bracken 1912. Apart from the addition
of current common species names, the texts are exactly as
in the original papers. Malcolm Lee has provided an important
appendix on the now well proven use of a bat detector for
locating bush-crickets and some grasshoppers (where these
have ultrasound in their stridulation or song). The final
appendix is a full analysis by Malcolm Lee of the 5,400 orthopteroid
records held on the database held and managed at ERCCIS. This
shows, for each species, the number of records by date class
and the number of tetrads, together with a complete listing
of species in order of the number of recorded tetrads, to
give a clear picture of the most, and least, commonly recorded
species. This highlights the particular under-recording of
the pest cockroach species, originally as a result of their
ubiquity and, in our more hygienic times, by owners of premises
being most unhappy to have details of infestations published.
The atlas is completed with a full bibliography and reference
list, and an index of species.
This full colour atlas is available through the Environmental
Records Centre for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly at a cost
of £15.00 (£13.00 for CISFBR members) plus £1.30
P&P. If you would like to order a copy please contact
